What is it about January? It seems that at the start of a new year, affiliate marketing commissions sharply increase, signaling a revived interest in making money online. Here’s how you can make the most of it…

You’ve probably tried referral marketing, where you write about this or that ebook, and then offer your readers a Clickbank or Paydotcom affiliate link. You then (probably) sat back and waited for the magical commissions to start pouring in, only to find out that that didn’t happen.

So you gave up, deleted your web pages, and turned your back forever on your fledgling online business.

What you may have glossed over, however, is the timing of your home business experiment. For example, when did you promote a product online? Were you expecting sales in a month where people were not exactly in a buying mood?

A lot of my friends tend to shy away from affiliate marketing. They think it’s too hard, and besides, they’re earning more AdSense dollars anyway. So they focus only on AdSense and don’t even bother promoting anything else. Yes, they have some banners or square ads pasted in their sidebar, but they haven’t blogged a product review.

So, how does January fit into this? For the past couple of years, January brings in a spike of affiliate marketing referrals. The commissions (based on some internet marketing experiments) outpace AdSense earnings. In some cases, by as much as four times.

No, I’m not saying forget AdSense and just focus on direct selling in January. You can do both, actually. What I am saying, though, is you need to assess what you will display in certain hotspots or high visibility areas of your web pages.

The typical premium virtual real estate on most pages online is called the “above the fold” area. That’s what people see when they first land on your page and they haven’t pressed the pagedown key yet.

So the January strategy is this: promote your affiliate marketing products in the “above the fold” area of your site. Yes, they can co-exist with your other ads, although focus will help you earn more.

Why is this happening in January? Well, it’s a new year, and people want to embark on new projects. People have new plans, and these will require investments in new tools and training. Even if the product you are promoting is not new (in terms of internet time), there are newcomers coming online everyday, and January ignites the “I got to do something new” spark in all of us.

While 2007 saw the rise of regular blogs earning around $300 ~ $400 each month in AdSense dollars, these levels dropped to sub-$100 a month levels per blog in 2008 (or drops of anywhere from 20% to 60%). No, these figures do not apply to all blogs, but that’s what my bubwits report from the field.

In the case of Marhgil, however, it appears that his blogs’ AdSense performance has been recession-resistant. No, not recession-proof, but he has managed to write about topics that attract enough visitors to more or less offset the decline in AdSense earnings seen even by prolific bloggers (such as Leo, the Entrepinoy) who publish relevant content.

(To The Niche Bloggers: Yes, there is hope. Persevere like Marhgil Macuha and never give up! Notice how he used the “finally”? There’s a not-so-hidden lesson in there…)

Marhgil’s blogs also go against the popular advice regarding the number of ads to show (i.e., “fewer AdSense ads = higher online income”), because his site is filled with ads.

He has a horizontal ad link near the top, a Google search box, a 728 leaderboard, and a vertical links unit at the top of the right sidebar. When you visit a particular blog post, you’ll also find a 336 ad box above his blog post title, another vertical ad link unit in the upper lefthand corner of the actual blog post (under the blog post title), and another 336 ad between the bottom of his blog post and the comments section.

I once asked him if he tried reducing the number of ads to see if he will earn more money online. He hasn’t tried this because he does not want to risk seeing a drop in his advertising revenues. Well, now that he has finally reached at least $1,000/month I suppose he will all the more not try reducing the number of ads he displays in his sites.

Sure, some regular readers may wish Marhgil had fewer ads. But they still keep coming back to read his blog anyway. Yes, he breaks a lot of guru blogging “rules” but readers keep returning to his site.

So, how does Marhgil wildly succeed with AdSense? He chooses his blog topics well.

This is what profitable AdSense boils down to: Write about topics that people (whom advertisers care about) will want to read online, while getting tons of traffic from the search engines (SEO organic traffic thanks to well-earned backlinks).

Some people are asking how to make money online by selling ebooks. Others have even found themselves researching for days, especially after changes in financial circumstances have forced them to consider alternative sources of income, without necessarily having to rely on AdSense. As you go down the list, check those topics that you are interested in. Among those, check again those which you can write 30 articles about.

Eventually, you’ll have items with two check marks. Those are the topics that you will focus on. It will help if you rank those remaining items in the order of your interest and passion. Remember, you will need to write 30 articles (around 400 words each) about that topic, so it helps if your interest level is high.

I don’t quite subscribe to the notion that financial issues will force you to be interested enough to write 30 articles about any topic. Believe me, if you just force yourself to write, it will show. And your readers will quickly pick up those vibes.

Remember, we’re talking about selling ebooks online. If you are unable to connect with your readers, the chances of successfully selling the ebook and making money online will be pretty slim.

Wait… it’s not as much “connecting” with your readers as it is with helping your ready-to-buy readers go ahead with their decision to purchase the ebook online.

Believe it or not, but there are lots of people who are already on the verge of buying an ebook, but are searching the web for that tipping point or final push. They’re looking for your opinion and assurance that things will be all right, and that they should go ahead and get that ebook they’ve been itching to get these past few days.

So please target those double-checked topics that you are interested in and even passionate about. If you’re interested about something, there are others who are just like you. Reach out to them.

Ebooks: Create Your Own or Resell One

If you are a fast writer, you can use free software (OpenOffice.org) to produce ebooks in PDF format. If you want to be even faster, you can also resell pre-written ebooks.

With your list of hot topics, you simply need to visit those sites offering master resale or even ebook resell rights, and choose the ebooks that will appeal to the people you want to serve online.

You can also visit places such as Clickbank and Paydotcom to see what ebooks are being sold, and sign up as an affiliate for those products. Once again, choose products that you think your target market will buy. Go ahead and visit the ebook salespage and ask yourself if it is compelling enough to convince and motivate others to buy.

Okay… if you know whom you want to serve, and have the ebooks that they are willing and able to buy online, the next step is to create your web site.

Create Your Ebook-Selling Website

Think of a domain name (i.e., Google.com) that makes sense from the point of view of the people you want to serve online. For example, if you are targeting people who want to have more money, then a domain name which contains phrases such as “make money” or “money online” will make sense.

For example, when your target market visits a search engine and types in “how to make money online” and then they see your web site in the search engine results, do you think they will click and visit it if it looks like MakeMoneyOnlineGrizzly.com? Of course they would! So choose your dot com domain name.

These are sites that basically contain webpages whose sole purpose is to get readers to click on over to the merchant sites, via an affiliate referral link. If you’re planning to create a product review site using so-so articles, your site will have a difficult time ranking well in the search engines.

You don’t have to write like Hemingway, though. I’ve seen several product review sites that feature Clickbank or Paydotcom ebooks, and each review article on that site contains 250 to 300 words only.

In the case of your hybrid site, however, you will have some leeway. Afterall, your site does not contain just the review pages. You also have a blog (with at least 30 relevant articles), and you even directly sell your own (or those pre-written) ebooks.

Which brings us to this question: How do I sell my own ebooks?

Here’s a suggestion… try to sell the ebooks of others first, so that you will gain firsthand experience when it comes to marketing and promoting products online. You will learn what it takes to attract traffic, as well as what happens when a flood of visitors do go to your site and either buy or not buy.

(HINT: Publish relevant content that others will want to link to. Content + Backlinks = Online Profits)

Now this post is getting quite long, and you might end up drowning in a lake of information overload before you even make money on the web. So here’s a quick summary…

1. Know your market and why you can and want to serve them.
2. Create your ebooks or find ready-made ones with resell rights.
3. Think of a click-attractive domain name for your site.
